Drug Cost Exception

For certain drugs on our formulary, you will have to pay more than your standard co-payment if you choose to use a higher cost drug when a lower cost drug is available. This may happen if your doctor writes you a prescription for a brand-name drug and a lower cost generic is available. If you choose to buy the brand-name drug rather than the lower cost generic you will have to pay the difference between the cost of the drugs as well as the co-payment. This added cost is charged as part of a Maximum Allowable Cost program. This program encourages use of lower cost generic and multi-source brands and helps you, your Plan and Medicare save money.

Visit our Prescription Drug Savings link for information on generic drugs and the many savings opportunities you may find if you currently use a brand-name drug and are able to make the change to a generic equivalent or alternative*. Consult your doctor and see if a lower cost alternative is right for you.

*	A generic equivalent is a drug that has the same active ingredients, meets the same quality standards as the brand-name, and is sold under a generic name.
	A generic alternative is a drug that may be used to treat the same condition for which the brand-name drug was prescribed.

Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) are mailed monthly to SilverScript members who have filled prescriptions the prior month. EOBs begin mailing the last week of each month for the previous month’s claims. Look for information on the Safety.Savings.Service. page of your EOB. The content may change monthly as new offers or updates are available.
